Q&A With Dr. Teresa Deveaux

Dr. Teresa Deveaux, Head of L & D / Chief Encouragement Officer at Enjoy Technology Inc. speaks at conferences on topics such as leadership, goal achievement, and career realization. After leadership roles in 3 different engineering orgs, she was hooked on the link between the development of employees, leader behavior and organizational culture. She was a member of a six-person panel titled “Amazing Women at Microsoft" and most recently shared her experience "Taking care of yourself while Taking on the World" in a main stage speech at the 2018 Women of Silicon Valley conference. In 2018 she was honored as 1 of 3 finalists for the inaugural Global Women in Tech "Mentor of the Year" award.
Deck 7: How old were you when you had your first paying job?
TERESA DEVEAUX: About a month before my 16th birthday I became a lifeguard and swimming coach in my hometown of Montreal, Quebec. I had trained hard, taken many certifications and spent significant time practicing my skills to prepare for the job ….. and I believe that this depth of preparation is what I have done for every new role ever since!

D7: How would you describe your leadership style?
TD: One of the biggest compliments I ever received is that I am a masterful “situational leader” in that I meet each of my direct reports and colleagues where they are in their development journey. I also consider myself to be the “Chief Encouragement Officer” of any team I lead, based on my belief that employees who are challenged, motivated and supported bring their best selves to work.
D7: What’s the most exciting part about being a leading figure in the field of technology?
TD: For nearly 20 years, I held a variety of leadership roles at Microsoft, a significant force in the IT industry. Now, as the Head of Learning & Development at Enjoy Technology, I am able to combine my work experience with my academic background in support of an amazing startup. I am excited to find creative new ways to educate a mobile workforce and to share those learnings with my industry peers.

D7: Do you feel that women in technology careers face barriers not faced by their male counterparts? In your opinion, what are the initiatives to make it better?
TD: Research shows that women still lag men in IT when it comes to promotions, salary and career trajectory. I am a huge advocate for gender (and minority!) parity and believe that one-to-one mentoring is a significant path to achieving this goal. Additional initiatives I believe will make an impact on parity are the mandatory inclusion of women on the Board of Directors for both private and public companies as well as public reporting of gender (and minority!) representation data for tech companies. I remain hopeful and committed to the cause!
